Opening of the Alboran Sea

چکیده

Opening of the Alboran Sea-THE Alboran Sea contains two basins deeper than 1,000 m separated by a ridge which we shall cal1 the Alboran marginal fracture (Fig. 1). Seismic reflexion studies and data from the Joides drill site 121, situated exactly on the northern limit of the western basin, show that the deepest sedimentary layers, lying on the substratum, are older than upper Burdigalian (14 m.y.), but-probably younger than lower Aquitanian (23 m.y.)'. But we do not know whether the substratum of the deep basins is young oceanic crust or foundered continental crust. Here we shall assume that the portions of the basins deeper than 1,000 m indeed consist of new surface created by the separation of two rigid plates during the Middle Miocene, and we shall discuss whether the structure is geometrically compatible with such an opening. If such a rigid opening occurred, it should be possible to reconstruct its geometry by identifying the transform faults.. ,

Marine Geology

To constrain the timing of rifting in the western, eastern, and northern parts of the Alboran Sea basin, seismic reflectors, corresponding to biostratigraphic boundaries and unconformities from the Miocene to Recent, are correlated using synthetic seismograms. Regions of adjacent coeval compression and extension are found in the Alboran Sea basin. Normal faulting continues in parts of the easte...

Models of magnetic and Bouguer gravity anomalies for the deep structure of the central Alboran Sea basin

Magnetic and gravimetric data from the central Alboran Sea allow identification of two axes of crustal thinning, which were probably active during the Oligocene—Early Miocene. The western Alboran basin axis is subparallel and may be related in origin to the Gibraltar Arc. The ENE—WSW trending Alboran Channel axis is probably intruded by basic igneous rocks and may represent the western end of t...

Ocean Drilling Program Leg 161 Preliminary Report Mediterranean Sea Ii - the Western Mediterranean

Leg 161 was the second in a two-leg ODP program to address both tectonic and paleoceanographic objectives in the Mediterranean Sea. The paleoceanographic program concentrated on reconstructing Atlantic-Mediterranean water exchange and the paleoceanography of the western Mediterranean during the late Cenozoic. Tectonic studies focused on the origin and tectonic evolution of the Alboran Sea as a ...

Particulate Barium Fluxes on the Continental Margin: a Study from the Alboran Sea (western Mediterranean)

Particulate biogenic barium (bio-Ba) fluxes obtained from three instrumented arrays moored in the Alboran Sea, the westernmost basin in the Mediterranean Sea, are presented in this study. The mooring lines were deployed over almost one year, from July 1997 to May 1998, and were equipped with sediment traps at ~500-700 m depth, ~1000-1200 m depth and 30 m above the sea floor (~1000-2200 m). The ...

“ Submesoscale , tidally - induced biogeochemical patterns in the Strait of Gibraltar ”

Tidal forcing and its fortnightly variation are known to be one of the main regulating agents of physical and biogeochemical signatures in the Strait of Gibraltar and surrounding areas. Samples obtained during spring and neap tides in the region were analyzed to determine the influence of this tidal variation on the submesoscale distribution of water masses and biological elements. During sprin...
